Karma and the price of gasoline
In many ways I think the rising price of gasoline is somewhat rooted in that old principle of karma - you reap what you sow. For far too long the industrialized world (mainly the US) has been living/abusing a life of excess. What with all the huge homes and huge cars, people have way too much especially when being comfortable can be had at a much lower level of excess. So in some ways we as a nation are paying for our past sins. This world is connected - even though it may seem we are far away from so many places. You see, we are all connected - what one does has an impact on many others. This country's excess in the past was built on the fact that large areas of the world were not industrialized - 3rd world if you will. Well now, China is ramping up, India is ramping up and many other areas of the world are bringing their standard of living up to a level that is more in line with the industrialized world. The impact of this change is that raw materials, gasoline, food and many other items are being consumed at rates never before seen in the history of man. What does that mean for you and me? Greater demand means less supply and prices rise. Simple as that. Blame whomever you want - government, OPEC, ethanol, farmers but the truth is more people are consuming at a higher level and that effects all of us. Unless supplies are increased, consumption is reduced or new technologies are implemented, we will have this issue. |
