I fixed my toilet today
Ok, so I did something outside of my comfort zone today. My toilet was constantly running - nothing major just a slow leak but it was a waste of water and I pay for water so might as well fix it, right? So there are only two components in a toilet tank - the flapper which holds the water in the upper tank and the fill valve assembly which regulates the amount of water coming into the tank thus filling the tank. The problem had to be one or the other so rather than chance it, I bought both items at the local home improvement store. First I flushed the toilet and turned the water valve off thus emptying the upper tank which will allow me to work in the tank. Next I changed the flapper - took the old one out and put the new one in - which was pretty easy. I turned the water back on and allowed the upper tank to fill but found that the slow leak continued. I drained the upper tank again. Next I took out the fill valve assembly which is the new one called the fluidmaster - this one doesn't have the ball on the end like the old toilets, just a fill valve tower. The process was simple enough - just a matter of taking the water line off and unscrewing the assembly from the tank. Same process in reverse to put in the new valve assembly, attaching the water line and turning on the water to fill the upper tank. Well, that did the trick - upper tank filled and not a leak - Wonderful! A sense of pride rushed over me and I felt I had accomplished something. Funny how the little things in life can sometimes bring a lot of joy. |

Good job! I have basically given up trying to fix slow leaks - the water supply contains way too many minerals, which causes a rapid build-up of a crust on the flapper, which in turn prevents it from forming a tight seal with the pipe that leads to the bowl. It's just a matter of wiping away the calcium crust from the rubber flapper, but it's tedious to plunge your arm into the toilet tank just about every day.
